Poem Illumination- Walking Across the Atlantic by Billy Collins

Reflection
My intentions for this project from the last blog post have not changed dramatically.  I have stayed on the same path of going with my instincts to create my final piece.  For the final my first instinct was to draw the water from the fishes point of view looking upwards.  After successfully creating this piece I decided that I wanted to incorporate some part of the fish into my final as I had spent a lot of time understanding the different aspects of the fish and I wanted to include these findings in my final.  That is when I decided to include the fish tail and part of the fish body with the scales.  I decided not to put the fish on the same piece of paper as the water because I wanted the fish to really stand out so I created the fish on  a different sheet of paper and then pasted it on top of the water.  I though about doing two fish, but decided against it because I thought it would look like the fish were swimming away from something as oppose to just swimming in a natural direction.  Through my use of line and direction I tried to create movement on the page which was further created with the addition of the fish tail to show movement across the page.  The other formal element I used a lot was color and using different colors to create a very vibrant scene.  All together I think this project was a really amazing experience for me because I had a really in depth process that went all different places which was really interesting.  I enjoyed just going with my initial instincts and not being so worried about what I was going to end up doing in the end, but instead just following my instincts and seeing where those ended up taking me.

  1. I am very impressed with how you employed pastels to create such a precise work! You used color very effectively to demonstrate the many tones in water and the natural world using many different colors really brings the work to life. Your decision to only include one fish allowed the water to be the focus of the work nd Wally placed the observer in the moment. The piece definitely displays motion and a certain fluidity. Great work!

  2. Anisa,
Your use of pastels was an excellent choice. Because you did not simply use blue to create your water, I could really notice the details of water, including its various colors and reflections. When I look at your work, I think of a swimming pool, and all the shimmery colors/reflections the water shows. I love how you placed a fish tail at the corner, making it seem as if the fish had swum across the page. Furthermore, the fact that you made the fish orange made it stand out, but not completely dominate the composition since it is rather small and placed the very edge. Great work!

  3. Anisa-
Your ability to use pastel to create such rich, vibrant colors and textures is very impressive. I admire you for not forcing the process, but simply letting one method lead you to the next until you found a medium and subject that you wanted to employ in your final. The fish tail really pops because the red and orange colors directly contrast with the cool blues and purples. It gives the picture a greater sense of depth and also a sense of movement. A suggestion is to include another medium such as pen for your fishtail to make it stand out even further in the foreground.

  4. I really love how you used pastels for your medium, and the different shades of blue with the orange makes the piece really stand out. I really get the sense of water, and it's exactly what I picture when I read the poem that you intended to illuminate. The fish tail is my favorite part! The red orange and bit of yellow really go well together, and the attention to detail is amazing! Your choice of colors really makes the painting that much more interesting to look at. I've never experimented much with pastels, but now I want to because this looks so good!

  5. Anisa,

I really think that your attention to the formal details of your piece really shows in your final. I completely agree with your choice to include the fish in your piece as it really adds to the work. The texture given from the second piece of paper that the fish is on really creates a sense of depth and I think it was a very successful decision. The lines in the water and the composition really flows and gives the viewer a really great feeling of the motion of water. The different shades of water also reflect the movement of the water and gives it the mood of a cheerful place, and overall you were very successful in all of your formal decisions and the final piece.

  6. Anisa - Great work over all. The overwhelming support of the comments exemplify how your dedicated approach to process led you to the creation of a strong work of art. One detail for you to consider is Kennedy;s insight into thinking of a swimming pool; does that interpretation resonate with you, or is there a sense of sea or ocean you wish you could have transmitted? It is extremely difficult to represent water in a visually interesting way and you did that well! I am most excited by your process and how you arrived at your results. You have a series of wonderful drawings and along the way you gained a clearer sense of your intentions and how to best communicate those through visual means (employing a dedication to craft, the formal elements and conceptual depth). Well done!
